Guatemala is a jewel in Central America, unknown to most. We welcome the chance to support your exploration of this beautiful land and its rich culture while journeying deeply on the spiritual, sexual, shamanic path. ISTA has been holding trainings annually in Guatemala since 2012, partnering with the wonderful eco-retreat Villa Sumaya on the shores of stunning Lake Atitlan.
In March 2020, ISTA returns to Villa Sumaya, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala for the 9th consecutive year for back-to-back Level 1 & 2 trainings followed by celebration Tribe Time. The narrow land-mass of Central America, linking the huge continents of North & South America, represents a significant shamanic point on this earth to anchor a new paradigm of loving power in these times of change and upheaval. We are proud to partner with such a beautiful venue prioritising ecological sustainability and the support of indigenous traditions, arts and community.
Welcome to Our Venue: Villa Sumaya – Lake Atitlan
Surrounded by three striking volcanoes and over 1,000 feet deep, this magnificent lake’s beauty is encapsulated in the meaning of the Mayan word atitlan: “the place where the rainbow gets its colors.” Surrounding the lake itself are many small Mayan towns, each with their own colored and patterned textiles, artistry and traditions. Renowned as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Aldous Huxley famously wrote of it: “Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlan is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It really is too much of a good thing.” The vibrant nature and ability to step outside of the busy modern world whilst still enjoying luxurious comfort, and the distinct energies of this remarkable volcanic crater combine to make this a powerful setting to dive deeply into the ISTA experiences.
ISTA is delighted to hold the Guatemala Spiritual Sexual Shamanic Trainings at the stunning Villa Sumaya, (voted #2 in Central America and #25 in the World for Relaxation/Spa Hotels by Trip Advisor). This eco-oriented, full service, family owned retreat training center and hotel, is situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Atitlan (at 1,500 ms/4,500 ft ASL). With an uninterrupted vista punctuated only by a skyline of three perfect volcanoes, Villa Sumaya has two world-class temples for us to use, with palm roofs, and panoramic lake views, hardwood floors and a glass pyramid skylight.
Participants will share beautiful bespoke rooms, each carefully appointed, with a private bathroom that has all the modern conveniences, and a spacious veranda where the lake is a stage. In your room you’ll be surrounded by flowing fabrics (the hallmark of Guatemalan artistry), hand-crafted ceramic tiles, high-quality linens, wooden furnishings mixed and matched in a down-to-earth duo of adobe browns, indigo blues and stone-washed sienna. At Villa Sumaya where earth meets the sky and the stars literally tumble to the horizon, communing with nature, comet-countdowns, sunset-spotting and magical twilights along with meditative mornings are high on the agenda.
We will dine together buffet-style at Cafe Sumaya, the retreat’s jewel of a restaurant, with a stunning view of the lake. Cafe Sumaya offers a culinary-conscious menu for slow food aficionados and eco-epicureans. A vegetarian based eclectic blend of local and international cuisine, created from Guatemala’s cornucopia of fruit and vegetables. Baked goods are produced daily. The scent of fresh bread and tortillas is utterly intoxicating! Breakfast includes a main dish, granola, yogurt, fruit and other sides. Lunch has a main entrée, side dishes, green salad and fruit. The Dinner meal includes soup, main entrée, side dishes, and dessert. A range of organic, herbal and caffeine teas as well as coffee is available 24/7. There is also an onsite juice bar that may tempt you to try delicious raw cacao bliss balls, kombucha or a strawberry ginger kombucha tea or one of our tropical smoothies if you desire additional treats.
This is an ideal place to integrate the trainings with access to lush gardens, hammocks, and cozy shaded or full sun sitting areas. There is a lake-front solar heated pool, hot tub and wood burning sauna for the group’s use.
Is available in the dining room and courtyard areas only for a small fee with a Free computer available for all to use. We invite you to unplug as much as possible during ISTA retreats.
The retreat centre is only accessible by boat and is a 4 – 5 hour journey from the airport in Guatemala City. We strongly recommend all participants arrive the day before to ensure they are present in time for the opening ceremony.
